Dear Colleagues,

we are glad to announce the visit of Professor Peter Schemmer, an internationally honored and outstanding personality in transplant medicine. Peter Schemmer is an academic surgeon and clinical scientist who has devoted himself to both surgical oncology and solid organ transplantation. While he performs general, endocrine, upper and lower GI surgery his special interest is both liver transplantation and hepato-pancreatobiliary surgery including minimal invasive approaches. Prof. Schemmer was trained in General Surgery at the University of Heidelberg, Germany as well as at several renowned institutions in USA and Asia and was involved in organ transplantation from the very start of his surgical career. In November 2016 he has been appointed as Chairman of the Dept. of Transplant Surgery, Surgical University Clinic, Medical University of Graz, Austria and since September 2017 he is the elected Director of the newly founded Transplant Center Graz. In October 2018 he has been appointed as Chairman of the Dept. of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, Surgical University Clinic, Medical University of Graz, Austria.

Transplant medicine is a complex and rapidly developing field, not only in terms of research and technical procedures but also in terms of organizational and structural requirements. The resulting challenges have been approached in different manners by collaborating European countries. We are looking forward to this expert overview and analysis of chances and pitfalls of the German versus the Austrian transplant system, and beyond. Moreover, we are very much looking forward to a lively in-depthdiscussion with all of you.
